spray on foam on underbody for greater insulation from cold?

Has anyone tried spray on ( waterproof) foam on the underbody of a Scamp trailer? Looking to increase my insulation factor and cant find anyone who has done this or  a product tht might work. I have found products that seal the underbody from corrosion( in autobodyshops) but nothing for both protection from corrosion AND insulation? Any ideas out there?

Escape Trailer

This is an option on Escape Trailers so I know it is done, however, don't know the product they use. It does make it more difficult to work on anything on the underside of the trailer as you have to dig out insulation and then re-shoot where you removed it.

Seems to be no shortage of this type of DIY product. This one seems to have a good set of reviews.

New Escape

Hi Earlene

I was thinking of you this weekend as you are getting really close to picking up the Casita. Are you going to take a shake down extended trip on the way home?

We are getting the Escape 19 not the 5th wheel, and picking up in Nov just in time for Scamp Camp SW. We're going to stay for a few days close to Chilliwack, BC to shake the trailer down and see some of the Pac NW.

Your Casita should be about finished.

Our Escape just broke the mold and hit the line. They send photos every week during the build process. wink

19ft I knew

Greg,I dont know why I put 5th wheel, duhh on me,I knew it was a 19ft...You will love it Im sure and that will be a great vacation staying around up there and then seeing some of the PNW on the way home. That is great that they send pictures along to you as yours comes along in being built! I had never heard of that, but what a great idea. Yes we are going to do the shake down around the factory down there in Tx and then decide where we are going to do the route coming back west,we are really thinking of leaving two weeks early and going to Ks and seeing sons and some other family members then down to Tx and coming home a southern route, just have quite decided the route home yet...I know how long it must seem to you guys waiting for your Escape as we have only been waiting since Aug and at first it didnt seem bad but as it gets closer it seems to get more exciting and more drug out:-) We figure to be gone about 4 weeks or so,then come home, regroup and hopefully get out again sooner then later

insulatibg under the trailer

thanks Greg. Will take a look at the product you recommended. I did see one Utube which suggested covering and taping the parts you dont want covered in foam before you start. I may try and get the info from Escape as to what they use....

insulating underside of scamp

I researched this extensively and the best method that I came up with was to use 2" polystyrene board which is very lightweight and made to be out in the elements as it is made for foundation insulation. Bought 2'x8' sheets and used Liquid Nails to adhere it to the underside of the floor. Make sure the Liquid Nails is the one formulated to work with polystyrene. This job requires a fair bit of custom cuts to fit the profile of the trailer underside and you have to keep each piece in place with a board and jack until it adheres but it is worth the work. This provides an R-10 insulating value and keeps the floor much warmer in colder temps. I have provided the links below to the products we used. I can post pics if anyone is interested.

Insulating underside continued

I forgot to mention that the prep before installing the insulation was the use of an industrial rust converter primer called Corroseal. This was applied to all the steel and then a finish coat of black Rustoleum. This will protect the frame for many years. The idea was to not put insulation up against steel that could continue to rust. Spray foam was used only sparingly at some of the joints where the foam butted up to the frame cross members causing a small gap. The polystyrene can also be painted when you are done but except for the 2" side profile in the main floor area you can't see the foam unless you get underneath the trailer. The insulation being impervious to water should also act to protect the underside of the floor to a degree.

Realized I had a bad link in previous post for the rust converter primer. This should work: https://www.homedepot.com/s/Corroseal-1-gal-Rust-Converter-Primer?NCNI-5

Keith,

Here are the best pics I have right now. The first is with boards/jacks still underneath supporting the insulation pieces while the Liquid Nails cures. The other is with the finished product near the rear of the trailer. The insulation is very secure but could always be cut away if for any reason something needed to be done to the floor or frame, etc.

Looks nice. Do you plan on

Looks nice. Do you plan on painting it?

I don't think it is something I will do right away, but if we find ourselves camping in the cold a lot I will definitely keep this in mind as an option. Thanks for sharing.
