ISO 13' Scamp

Hello everyone! My husband and I have been looking for a Scamp for a few years, and have been constantly scouring the internet for one for a few months. We hope to find an older Scamp in good condition that we can do some fixing up and customizing to. Willing to travel along the East Coast, South, and Midwest. Our goal is to visit the National Parks summer of 2017.

If anyone is thinking about selling or upgrading in the near future, PLEASE let me know. Excited to have family adventures in a camper. We know what a rare find they are and are ready to make the jump!

Hunting

Wanderer, How close have you come to getting your Scamp? Seems that they go REALLY fast! Seems to me that you have to have cash in hand and be willing to buy the FIRST day it is advertised.

The best to you on your hunt!

Scoring a Scamp

I agree with Mark, you have to be able to pounce fast with cash in hand!  If they are a fair price they go amazingly fast.  A lot of them (especially the 13 footers I think) are sold within 24 hours.  We had to jump on ours within hours of the ad coming out, and there were two other buyers waiting in the wings.  The seller said "cash only" period.  Good luck in your quest!

Keep Watching Listings

Be persistent following the listings, they sell sometimes within 20 min to several hours here:

Be ready to go and right away and purchase if you get response from seller. On real good ones, usually the first person in gets it. Here are some useful Buying tips to help.

Honest sellers?

This 1st statement is a BIG deterrent to a shopper living far away:

  1. "If you can't inspect the trailer personally or a trusted friend inspect it for you, don't buy it!  We repeat - Do not part with your money on a trailer you or a trusted friend have not viewed in person. Photos don't count as "seeing" the trailer. They could be stolen photos off of the Internet."
  2.  I recently wanted a 13' Scamp offered at least 2 days drive from me. This was the 2nd opportunity in the past few weeks. I know no one close to the seller and would have to rely on honesty and pics. I spoke with both sellers and they both sounded honest on the phone. In both cases a local buyer got the Scamp. It would seem that if there is a local buyer, that buyer gets the deal! Wouldn't it be great if we could all be honest and able to trust the folks who are posting Scamp's for sale on these forums?I guess I am still optimistic even at age 66. An old hippie affliction, I guess.

Buying new!

We have been looking on and off for several years in the New England area for a used 13 footer with no luck. It seems that 35 and 40 year old units in good shape are going for quite a bit of money if you can even find one. We decided to stop wasting our time looking for a used one, stopped in and visited the Scamp factory in Backus on a return trip from Yellowstone and two weeks later called and ordered a new one. For a few thousand dollars more we will get something close to what we want and everything in it will be new!! We will still be doing modifications, painted cabinet doors, new knobs, new curtains, new upholstery on the seats, converting the bunk bed to a dinette that converts back to a bunk when needed, new linoleum flooring, attempting to remove the Scamp lettering on the outside and making some changes to the outside appearance. We thought we could remodel a used one, but we will remodel a new one instead.

lots of work

Anthony, wow, sounds like you have a lot of work once you get delivery. I ordered mine with a linoleum floor, and blue fabric. I thought the front bunks already were convertible to a dinette. Please send pics when done.

Not so much work!

Mark, the standard does not come with both bunks and a dinette. The bottom bunk must be converted to a dining area. That's my project, and painting the cabinet doors. All the interior decor is on my wife, who can't wait to put her sewing room to use. Because we wanted to make quite a few changes, we thought we would buy a used one....until we tried to find one here in the east. That was a few years ago!! We decided to stop wasting time, buy new and make the changes we wanted. I'm sure there will be lots of pictures along the way.

Sounds like a great plan,

Sounds like a great plan, Anthony, look forward to seeing pictures as you make it your own. We have a young and growing family, so we are not in a position to buy a new scamp and customize too... fingers crossed we are able to get our hand on an older scamp!

Good choice Anthony

Anthony

You cant go wrong doing it like this. New axle, new refrig, new furnace, new awning, those things can be expensive.

Make a new one your own and you don't have to worry about a used one that you stick money into.

Hey Greg, (or anyone around!)

Hey Greg, (or anyone around!) I do have some questions. I haven't looked at the belly of a Scamp before, so I'm not sure what to look out for. I'm considering driving 8.5 hours and back tomorrow to see/ purchase a 1990 Scamp, but that's no small task with a toddler so I want to be sure it's worth it. Can anyone give me insight or an opinion? Thanks!
