Anyone concenred about the fiberglass off-gassing?

Hi all,

We are about to pick up the phone to give our CC for the deposit for a new 16' floor-plan #6 with a load of options.

Standard 16' with the "Package Option" and added to that the roof AC, furnace, 10' awning, outside step, 2" bike rack receiver, wheel on jack, microwave and bathroom sink.

We balked at vinyl floor since vinyl is know as bad for off-gassing chemicals that are carcinogens etc.

However formalin (gas form of formaldehyde)  is one of the many things emitted from curing fiberglass.

Apparently fiberglass continues to emit high levels for many many months.

So wondering about being inside the enclosed trailer to camp right after picking it up.

Anyone have any issues related to that?

Allergies, headache, etc.

Tnx for any insight...

Off-Gassing Inside a Scamp

The key to any concerns about off-gassing is ventilation and/or cross ventilation.

If your Scamp has been sitting for a while open the door and let it air out before entering.

If your Scamp is in storage, use a solar powered exhaust fan to get rid of any off-gas accumulation and bring in fresh air.

While you are Scamping keep the door open and/or leave windows open for cross-ventilation.

At night, you can leave a window open a tiny bit and crack open the roof vent to allow for fresh air infiltration throughout the night. Note: One fellow commenter does this even during winter Scamping to reduce interior condensation.

As a practical matter, your Scamp's shell has probably been curing for 30 to 60 days before you can even pick it up from the Hatchery, thereby minimizing any off-gasses coming from the shell.

You might even reconsider the vinyl flooring, as there is not that large a floor area inside a Scamp to be too concerned with the off-gasses produced.

Happy Scamping !!!

As Always,

Happy Scamping !!!

I have looked at the subject

I have looked at the subject and was not able to make a decision one way or another.  I suggest googling "off gassing of fiberglass trailers" and you'll see that it has been discussed before.  I am also concerned about the glue (epoxy?) that is coated on the fabric to hold it in place.  A sort of chemical sandwich.  It cooks in the heat but if sitting empty, that's a good thing because it lessens it.   I know when looking at the stick built, some of those were also  off gassing to the point that I turned around and left before entering.  We avoid formaldehyde like the plague including the tank additives that have it in them.  For the most part, some people are more sensitive than others and there is the option to get a higher dollar air cleaner which might help the situation which is one option I am pondering.

All looks good and new Scamp ordered

Well much deliberation that cost us a week on delivery our order is official and deposit paid.

From Scamp directly:
"We are using something that most manufacture of fiberglass shells are not using—PG3  polyunsaturated styrene.  Nothing we use has any formaldehyde."

Given the Hurricane Katrina trailer debacle I think all formaldehyde containing products have been eliminated from new construction. So the formalin gas is no longer an issue.

New Camper

Cloud,

You should also consider a Fantastic Fan for the roof vent.  Great units.  I got the same layout.  Great choice.  I wouldn't get the microwave from them though.  Way too expensive.  You can get that model unit yourself for about $125.  I got a Magic Chef that fit fine for $50.  They will give you the brackets for screw it down free.  Easy to do.  Also make sure you get an outside AC plug and I also got it with a second 12V plug above the side dinette.  I'd also recommend you stay over at a nearby campground to check things out in case you find some reason to go back before you leave the area.  There is a good cafe next to the Cenex station just South of the Hatchery.

Delivery delay :-(

The delay in our decision making on options delayed the pick up date for our new Scamp from the week of Sept 29th to ± second week of October.sad

So the old adage "You snooze, you lose" seems to be true...LOL

So we will miss out on some summer outings, but with the furnace may try to drive back on a north route through the U.P. of Michigan.

I did call Casita out of curiosity after finding a used on listed in Michigan (sold in 2 days) to see about the cost of adding the furnace.

Also Casita indicated wait times for their new ones was >90 days but now closer to 3.5 months but "might" be reduced to only 2 month waits in the winter.  Intersting on thier web site under FAQs they answered "No we are not an off-shoot/derivitive of Scamp!"

Anyway Scamp is mailing curtain, cushion and carpet sample swatches so we can decide on the color options.

Now waiting for the info on the trailer hitch.  I will post a question under the towing section to get some suggestions.

Happy we stayed with Scamp.

Gassy

I just picked up my Scamp from the factory last week.  It stinks inside like new carpet and the wood on the cabinets.  If it would stop raining long enough to keep the windows opened and the fan going, I'm sure the smell will lessen.
