SOI Website ReDesign

By now many of you have probably seen our recent redesign on www.fiberglass-rv-4sale.com. The SOI website has been up and running for a little over three years now and we are starting a redesign on our test server. The new base software will be more mobile compliant than the current is and should present better on smaller devices.

We'd love to hear any input you have while we begin this process as some of the items that are brought up may already exist, but folks are unaware that they are here.

Some ideas may not be able to be incorporated due to the software, but we are willing to look at the suggestions with an eye towards incorporating them if it makes sense and is possible. I.E. There are many features we can do with our software that other forums can't do and vice versa. We're on all the forums/social media platforms and we see the issues that each forum/social media platform has, including SOI, and have made notes and ideas.

As SOI members this is a great opportunity to have a say in how your online clubhouse goes forward so add some suggestions because we'd like your input to add to the design list.

Quality Pictures

Hi Greg,

I think this website is great.

I would like to be able to post larger format pictures and have all pictures show larger on the screen. I have an 18 mp camera (not that large by todays standard) and have to cut way back on the quality to post pictures. Thanks for all your work.

Picture Enhancements Part 1

Hi Alan,

Thanks, I'm very glad you are enjoying the site. It is nice to have Scamp Owners International on the web now.

I'm glad you asked this question right off the bat, because pictures are what all forums and online sites are struggling with and trying to accommodate. Let me first lay out the issues with digital photography that website owners contend with and I won't go into too much detail but try and present an overview.

  1. Everything that is added to a website whether it is content, pages, slideshows, digital imagery, etc. has a cost associated with it. All of this requires storage on the hosting platform, and bandwidth to display to each user. Both of these items have an associated $$ cost.
  2. Normal content, pages, text and occasional pic with the content doesn't consume much storage or bandwidth.
  3. Digital picture upload if not restrained can wipe out both storage and bandwidth in a very short time. Most people don't understand how to adjust the settings on the new digital cameras and the defaults, if left on, yield photos that exceed 4+ MB for each photo taken which is astronomical in terms of storage and bandwidth required to display a set of 10 4MB+ photos that are uploaded. 90% of digital camera users have no need for 4MB+ photos in their daily lives, I have my cameras set to yield pictures at about 600K and change it based on what I'm needing at the time.
  4. In the website world to balance display quality, storage - bandwidth issues, and end user experience all forums generally try to keep uploaded pictures to a 250k or less limit. This provides ability to keep storage and bandwidth affordable and provide a good user experience to visitors with a balance of picture quality vs time to download the pictures on a thread.  Occasionally, you run across a site that allows larger, but you will see that 5 photos on a post take over a minute to complete loading on your screen. They don't pop up, but slowly load from the top to bottom for each one. Large venues like Facebook, Google, Craigslist etc. usually limit and resize photo uploads to 50k or less, so smaller forums usually have better size limitations. However, none of us have 100 million visitors and thousand of website developers on staff to deal with these issues.
  5. Then there is the sideways issue that has surfaced in the last few years due to primarily Apple products stripping or formatting the EXIF information on the photos and they upload sideways or upside down. Very few people understand how to edit and manage their digital pictures in order to prevent that from happening and not send their relatives an email containing attached pictures that exceed 30MB, sideways photos, or upload them like that to an online venue.

The above is a simplified overview of what all website venues are dealing with in terms of digital picture upload and you don't want to know the costs associated with allowing uploads of large photos, not to mention degrading the user experience on the website.

I'll cover in part 2 what is already in place at SOI and Fiberglass-RV-4sale that helps balance the picture dance and what we'll be doing over the next few months to try and enhance the picture capabilities.

Big Pictures

Greg,

Thanks for the explanation. I know very little about computers so my question was naive. In the past to get pictures to upload I have done the following. Taken the picture from a distance and cropped it down or set my camera to a smaller format. Both work.

Thanks again!

Picture Enhancements Part 2

We're beginning to make some adjustments to the picture upload settings to make the process easier, yet retain the advanced editing capabilities that we have here at SOI. Some of the picture uploading features have always been here, but they operate in the background, and some new ones are being added.

  1. When you upload a photo per the Uploading instructions on a post, the SOI website will automatically downsize the picture if needed to bring the photo into size requirements for long term storage and website usability. We have adjusted the settings this week to 1366x768 (px) which is a bit larger than we have done in the past to respond to Alan's suggestion in comment #4.
  2. The SOI photo upload was set to default to a "medium" size image with a drop down available for the user to select "Original" image size or "large" if they wanted a different size than the default. We have changed this currently to default to "Original" image size for testing.
  3. Many of the online forums have issues with the pictures uploading sideways or upside down. We experience this as well from time to time at SOI, but our software now allows the installation of a module that helps correct this on upload. We still get an occasional photo that uploads sideways, but very rarely now and the editors will correct it fairly quickly when they see one.

Our goal is to make the user experience smooth and as simple as possible, yet retain the sophistication of a more powerful editor for those that can utilize the features. We're one of the only forums that allows you to put photos in your post and control exactly where you want to put each photo.

Post any questions, feedback to the new settings, or things you'd like to see. We're currently designing the new look and feel so we'd love to hear your suggestions.
