with tongue weight

Interesting point!  My measurement of 16" to the top of the ball was with the trailer attached, and mine has a tongue weight of around 195 pounds.

If you get a chance....

When you get a chance could you please post the height of the bottom of the ball and the height of the trailer tongue with it removed from the tow vehichle? (I'm not sure if this will help me or confuse me, but I'd like to know anyway. Haha.)

And, at 16 inches, is the trailer tongue level? Did you check it with a bubble level or just eyeball?

Thank you for your earlier reply, it's much appreciated. :)

RE: Alas, another newbie needs help....

I second Greg's suggestion to get an adjustable hitch (ball mount).  That way you can adjust it wo what you need, regardless of how much or little weight that you put in the pick-up.  Yes, there are more expensive, but I have needed three different ball mounts in only a couple of years, and would have been better off with one adjustable one.

No!  You measure it as

No!  You measure it as instructed.  The only place the tongue weight would be in play is if your tow vehicle suspension is weak.  The only way to fix that would be tor repair the suspension,

scamp 13'

I plan to pick mine up in March. My salesman (Alan) told me to use 17 inch height to the top of the ball, towing with Ford 2015 Transit Connect Mini Van

When I put 235 LBS on the rear bumper the ball drops 1/2 inch'

Mine have most of the Options but one tank in front and the bigger battery.

I will be adding the sway bar before I start back to Florida.

Tacoma

Gummy,

I too tow with a Toyota Tacoma 4 X 4. I have a 16' Scamp. The factory suggests a receiver to be set at 21", mines at 20 1/2" and the trailer is 19" to the top of the tongue. When hitched up it sets pretty level. I think Scamp thought it out before advising on what you should have. If the 13' is recommended for an 18" high ball, just pick a receiver close as you can get and don't worry about it too much. If your not overly happy with it you can always try another after you have tried towing. I don't care for the adjustable ones because of their weight.

Here is some good news for you about your Tacoma. Because of the wheelbase being longer than the small cars the 13' is designed for, you won't experience sway problems. My 16' tows like the truck and trailer is one unit. I have the V6 4.0L and 5 speed Automatic with trailer package and electric brakes. I tow only in 4th gear and get around 16 mpg in rolling hill terrain, no mirror extensions needed.

Good luck on your new trailer!

Adjustable hitches

When we pick something new up at the factory,we take our adjustable hitch just to make sure we can get the trailer level, when we get home we go buy exactly what it takes as we dont like using the adjustable hitch all the time, the weight seems a little heavier but to pick something up you never know,Scamp told us one height but when it was hooked up it wasnt quite right,so hubby adjusted it to where he wanted it before the 1700 mile trip home

Wait till it's delivered

Since Gummy says it will be delivered in January, I'd wait till it came and then he will know exactly what he'll need.

Hitch receivers can run between $20.00 to $35.00 depending where you go.

Thank you for your input. :)

I didn't expect so many responses.

I was considering an adjustable hitch and may just end up going that route.
