First trip in a new scamp

We will travel from our home in Western Massachusetts to pick up our new scamp 13 in July. We pulled a rented teardrop for a week, but other than that we haven't traveled with a trailer. We have done car/tent camping. Quite a few folks talk about taking small trips before trying a big on, but it would be a 1500 mile trip just to drive straight home! We are thinking about exploring some of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Upper Michigan, and Ontario on a more leisurely trip back.  What do you think about doing that (in July)? Is that a good time to travel that route? HOw important is it to have some shakedown outings first?

Northern WI is beautiful in

Northern WI is beautiful in July. I would make reservations first as that is a busy time of the year Amicon Falls and copper falls state parks are beautiful. If something came up you could beat feat back to Backus. If you feel comfortable that everything is working continue on. Enjoy your new Scamp.

Northern MN and WI after Scamp pickup

Do you like water?

I pick mine up in June and this is the plan for the first three stops. I want to do full hookup and boondocking before I get to far from the factory. Lake Itasca is the start of the Mississippi river, 6 mile lake is free dispersed camping, and Herbster is on the lake shore and I’ve taken pictures of all three of my RVs there. The mast head of my F/B page is that campground.

It is a good idea to camp in

It is a good idea to camp in it close to the factory for a few days after you pick it up to make sure everything works. We picked up our Scamp last August and camped in it close to factory and it was good that we did that because our refrigerator was bad and had to be replaced. I have heard from other people that had issues also so I don't believe they check them out very well after they are built.

Travel through the UP

We now live in the UP of Michigan and have camped numerous times up here. Michigan has great state parks. After spending our first summer camping last year ( Mi to SD) i have found that state parks are the way to go especially in Michigan. Go on line 6 mo. out you can reserve a specific site here. Look at The Keweenaw Pesinsula  ( Copper Harbor , Mcclean, ) , St. Ignace, etc.. We had no mechanical issues with our 13 ft er. We also came from a season of tent camping and it was fun learning to operate the Scamp, its user friendly dont be afraid of it. They give a great demo when you pick it up. Before you depart stop just in Brainard to pick up travel supplies. PS: for piece of mind buy a lug wrench and sizzor jack.

Mojomedic, I am a bit surprised to hear that quality control is lacking at Scamp. I don't PU till Sept and had planned 2 nights at Ruttgers. Perhaps I should plan longer. How long did it take Scamp to replace fridge?

It only took them couple

It only took them couple hours to replace it but the frustrating part was we kept telling them it wasn't working they said you have to give it time so after 3 days and a fridge full of spoiled food we insisted they look at it and yes it was not working. We are now on our 3rd refrigerator bc it broke again in January!  Owner at scamp says Dometic is best RV fridge but parts are made in Japan!

broken fridge

Wow, x3. I wonder if other Scamp owners have had this bad experience. If Dometic is the BEST fridge, guess someone should make a better one!
