Mine too

My hatch kept doing the same thing to me a couple of years ago and I my wife cranked it down so tight that the gears in the crank box striped. When I went to replace the crank, I found that the escape hatch's red latch was not totally engaged to the frame and would rattle loose from the air pressure flowing over the camper when towing. Check yours and make sure its not that. Hope it helps. Mine never came loose since.

Thread Tightener

I've seen recommendations on using something like dental floss, scotch tape, or electrial tape wrapped around the threads to act as a tightener. Very tightly pulled electrical tape one wrap where the threads kind of pop through would make the most sense to me, towards the end of travel when closed.

It is also not an expensive and a common part to change out. Maybe just worn and a new crank unit would be the answer.

Hatch openining

We used to have a tent camper and the vent did this.  I would put a large rubber band from the crank to a nearby knob to keep it from doing this. I'm not sure this could be hooked up in the Scamp as I am not close to it.  Could you put a small screw on the side of the wood trim to hook a rubber band to?

Idea

We have a 16 Deluxe with a power vent (no escape hatch) so that has been no problem. However, in our front bathroom layout Scamp uses a popup power vent over the toilet. This has started to pop-up once we hit the road and might be a problem if we went through a rain storm while traveling. My solution is a piece of Styrofoam between the handle and ceiling.

Being creative is the key to happy scamping. We keep our curtains from falling off with rubber bands so simple is sometimes better. wink
