Which scale for tongue weight?

Is there a scale you use to measure tongue weight while on the road? I have ordered a wheel on the tongue jack and like many of you will be picking my Scamp up in Backus and driving it home to Calif. I want to know the tongue weight in advance of the long journey.

Correct me if I'm wrong

Mark, From what I've seen in this discussion group and on the Fiberglass Scamp group, since our 13 ft Scamps are so light on tongue weight we can use a bathroom scale. Someone took a photo of weighing their tongue weight and they had a bathroom scale sitting on some wood blocks so that it let the Scamp rest somewhat evenly on the scale (so the tongue wasn't angled sharply down on the scale), and that's how they got their tongue weight.

Wheel on jack

Thank you. I read that also, just wondering about the wheel on the jack. I see it rolling off the scale. I read somewhere about a bowl shaped device that the wheel sits in. Can't remember it it was part of the scale. Oh well, I have a long time to figure it out. 7 months till PU.

Mark, Yes, I plan on getting

Mark, Yes, I plan on getting one of those. Camco has one and it's one of those plastic flat pieces to help you level but one of them has the bowl in the middle of it for the wheel. I just thought I would sit that on the scale between the wheel and scale.

Wheel Chocks

The wheels of these trailers should always be chocked when the trailer is not hooked to a vehicle. You can use blocks of wood or you can buy plastic chocks from hardware stores, Walmart, Tractor Supply, etc. If the trailer wheels are blocked that should keep the tongue wheel on the scale. Also, We ordered a wheel when we ordered our Scamp. The wheel is an option. The Scamps all come with a flat plate that is interchangeable with the wheel. The flat plate will not roll as easily.  When camping or in your yard the trailer wheels should be chocked even if the flat plate is on the tongue jack. Many a camper has watched their camp trailer roll away when they unhook from the TV without wheel chocks in place. Stay Safe!

Hitch weight

CAT scale (or any truck scale) is a lot cheaper. Put the axle on one platform and the hitch on another. yes you may need to put a 2X4 under the hitch but that is only going to change the weight a couple of pounds and it's 1/10th the cost..

CAT scale

ac0gv, thanks for that suggestion. I am hoping to accurately determine the tongue weight my 1st day at Ruttgers, after loading my new Scamp with supplies. Hence a portable scale. Sounds like what you recommend is good but not portable.

Sherline

Greg, thanks. Looks great! A bit pricey for my wallet right now. I supose cost vs quality? Doesn't look like it would work with wheel in place.
