Retractable Screen Door

We have been working on securing everything from bouncing out on our trips as it’s been quite the mess when we arrive and open the door. When we said we’ll take some shakedown trips, we did not think that shaking was part of it.

Our folding screen door kept bouncing out of the track and falling in the floor. We bit the bullet and had a retractable screen made to fit. Fit it does and it’s great. The install took about 30 minutes.

Lite and bouncy

Funny but there is a fair number of people that have commented their 13's bounce or shake things a bit. So things not confined and on the floor is questionable where they will be when you arrive. I am guessing that the light weight contributes to the bounce and movement. Do the 16's act the same as they are a bit heavier. My harbor freight 4x8 trailer is notorious for rattling stuff loose. but it only weighs 350 Empty and 1,200 loaded to capacity. When full things are more likely to stay put. That looks like a nice screen door.

Bounce

Our 16 footer bounces really bad too. In fact on a long trip some of the screws would back out from the wood trim.  I fixed this by putting clear silicone in the screw holes and putting them back in. It acts like a glue.

they are all shakedown trips

My 16 rocks but has no sway or bounce. I have never had trouble with the screen bouncing out on the new style. Only with the clips letting the fabric come loose. I have had things come loose with every RV that I have owned. Bridge approaches are bad nationwide.

RE: they are all shakedown trips

If your retaining clips come out then it sounds like you have the new door and not the bi-fold that was giving Gene a problem.  BTW, I had the same problem and was told that some very slightly undersized clips made it to Evelands and into my 2015 Scamp, causing that problem.  Plisse sent me some new clips and I have not had a single one come out since.

Wheel Balance

I think it is worth the money to get the wheels balanced. Any one who has driven a car with an unbalanced wheel will know how much shaking it can cause. (on a vehicle much heavier than a Scamp!) Things can move in any vehicle so it's normal for some stuff will move around while on the road. As ac0gv has stated our poor roads don't help.

I bought new tires with my

I bought new tires with my purchase of this older trailer and it towed so much better . I think with no shocks on these the bouncing is more than  normal

Gene, so you replaced the OEM

Gene, so you replaced the OEM folding screen door with the new Plisse screen door I see.  This is a topic that comes up every so often so I wonder if you can provide some details.

Did you buy it from Plisse (Screen Solutions), or Scamp (Evelands)?  Did you install it?  Did you have to make any modifications or alterations?  What was the cost?  Any other tips for switching over to the new model?

BTW, its a nice door but you do need to vacuum the lower track to keep it operating well.  A little silicone spray likely helps but do not use anything like WD-40 that will attract dirt and cause it to bind.

All retractable screens can

All retractable screens can be cut to fit on height. There is no brand specific you need to worry about as any one will work. i just  went down to my local 100 year old screen shop and gave them the height and they cut down a stock size. the Width does not matter as it is a roll. They left the bottom and top tracks long for me to cut to fit which was easy. As was the lock latch placement. There is plenty of room between the door and existing track so no modifications were needed other than removing the existing vertical  stop so that I could have access to set the screws for the screen. Then I reset the stop. Do make sure to take out the existing track which is 2 screws before you measure. The screen cost me $225 .and i did the install Just a note the screen tracts should be wiped with lemon pledge which is what we use in the door and window business.

I am on quite the mission securing things so when i open the door is mostly as I left it.

Hey Gene.  I'm curious. Why

Hey Gene.  I'm curious. Why do you wipe it with lemon pledge?  Does that make it slide better?  I ask because I just got a 2018 Scamp and my screen door is hard to open and close.  Lots of friction.  I have to use both hands and some muscle to move it.

Randy, was it hard to open

Randy, was it hard to open and close since day one when it was new?  If so, I would assume its not installed right.

Otherwise keep the bottom track clean. Vacuum it well. I dont doubt that Lemon pledge helps but I think so does silicone spray lubricant (silicone, not oil based lubricants).
