Looking for an electrical repair person in Arizona specializing in Scamps

Hello all,

I’m Looking for an electrical repair person or shop in Arizona (Phoenix area) that specializes in Scamps or is extremely familiar with the scamp electrical systems (I.e. wiring, converters, 12v systems, 110 systems, breakers/ fuse, charging, etc.). The previous owner of my 1995 13’ scamp appears to have been very creative with things but I would really like to set things right as far as staying true to how things would have been originally from the factory. I just don’t have the time to do any of the work myself... even if it is straight forward. I would very much appreciate any leads!

You might want to check out Konrad, in Camp Verde, LHC West. They specialize in Casita's, there are no dedicated Scamp shops that I know of but LHC West may be able to help you. I have dealt with Larry at LHC in Texas and  they are good to work with. I would trust them before going to a big RV shop.

Thanks Eddie. I’ve actually spoken to little house a few years ago (when I was thinking about buying a Peris Pacer). As you said Casita’s are their thing but I was told that he would look at any scamp/casita style  and if it was something he could fix... he would work on it. I was just hoping to find someone closer.

Thats a tall order for sure, unless you get lucky and find someone like Greg who does Scamp rebuilds.

If the wiring has been highly altered and you are not happy with it then it might well be better to tear it all out and start from scratch. That is because its hard enough to trace the OEM wiring even with the color coding. And if it has been highly modified and not documented then it is that much harder. Plus, there is nothing especially high quality about the way Scamp (or most any other camper manufacturer) does the wiring. In particular, the Scotchlok connectors they use are sometimes problematic and even the wire nuts could be replaced with something better. And I wonder if the converter should be upgraded being so old. I would try to salvage any wiring that goes under the wall covering since its is probably hard to re-string it, at least to the point where it ties into the main wiring.

On the other hand, if most everything works and is safe, then maybe just some trouble shooting or selective removal of modifications would be better. Especially considering how expensive it could get if, say, you were paying by the hour for labor. Really can’t say without a look at it.

Thanks Gordon 2. I can appreciate both of your comments about the OEM quality and the wiring schematics. The previous owner of my scamp installed a cheap Harbor Freight charger and randomly spliced off for 12 volt power all over the place (in line fuses everywhere). The former owner also used old extension cords to run 12 volt power. Other than the charger none of the creative wiring shows until you open up any cabinet door. Then you find these strange tangles of wires, fuses and tape. Any time I talk to the larger RV repair places about these little fiberglass trailers they don’t seem to know much or don’t care. I ordered a new OEM converter/charger and I will also replace the 4 pin connector with a 7 pin. I was just hoping to find a local shop or hobbiest that would get the 12 volt  power “cleanly” to all the interior lights, lighter style outlets and pump. I’m figuring $50 an hour for 4 to 5 hours of work... does that seem reasonable?

Hard to say how long it would take without seeing it.. and even maybe after seeing it.  But based on your description I could see it being much more than 4-5 hours. At least he used fuses.. that increases the chances that if anything is not wired right, it wont cause damage.  No promises though.

I concur that the best course of action is to get the camper to a Scamp or Fiberglass Trailer rally or two and seek out knowledgeable owners and ask them to look it over and give some opinions.

Gordon kind of touched on it, that a hobbyist is the best resource as RV shops, etc are usually not good resources for these trailers.

Thanks Greg A. Our first outing with our 13 footer was as last years Sedona Christmas event. I  did manage to get some good information about physical upkeep and general maintenance. I was just hoping my post would help me find an ongoing resource for repairs that are either beyond my abilities or that I can’t seem to make time for.
