Big Bed vs. Standard Bed

Looking at putting in an order for a Scamp 13 soon but my wife and I are debating over whether we should go with the Big Bed design or the Standard design.  It seems the trade offs are counter space and closet for more bed space.  I'm curious if most couples go with the big bed design for a little more sleeping space ( my wife is short but I'm 6'2") and leave the standard bed design mostly for single campers.  Interested in members thoughts on either design option.

Bed

We have a 2017 16 Scamp Deluxe which includes the bigger bed design. (understand you are looking for a 13) In any event the bigger bed size is something less than a regular full size mattress in these trailers and we find it just the correct amount of room for the wife and I. I might suggest if you are making the purchase in-person at Scamp HQ you can look at the various trailers they have built. Besides the bed issue we had other options we were considering and standing in a new trailer and comparing features helped a whole lot. Everyone is very friendly and helpful at the factory.

........very glad we have the larger bed

Love The Big Bed

We are very glad we decided on the big bed for our 2015 13 standard. We are not big people but we still like the extra room. The little less cabinet is not an issue for us.

bed issues

My husband and I are not large people (5'9" and 5'8") and we don't weigh a lot.  We found the standard bed a bit too small width-wise for comfort.  I sleep on the couch, which is perfect for me.  I am not sure at 6'2" you could stretch out without going a bit diagonal.  Have you had a chance to spend some time in a 13'?

Viewed an older Boler trailer

Viewed an older Boler trailer which is roughly the same size.  Still looking to get in a 13 locally with and without the big bed (leaning in that direction though).  Thanks.

Bed Size

That is a tough one to answer with a 6’ 2” fellow. The length of the bed may be as much an issue for you as the width, but the big bed would probably help. If you get the AC the interior headroom may present an issue for you as well, since it drops down a few inches in the cabin. Have you seen or spent any time in a 13? I’d definitely take a look at the 16 as well. There are plenty of both that folks would be glad to show you in your area before you order. You can post a request here in the general forum and call Scamp Trailers and ask for owners in your area that are willing to show you their trailer.

I’m 6’ and wife is about 5’ 7” and we are OK in a 13 having had 2 of them, but I’d make sure that the interior room is going to be OK for you before ordering.

Beds

We have had a small bed 13 and have a large bed 13.  We much prefer the large bed.  The loss pf counter space and closet space was an easy trade off, after all it is nice to be comfortable.

Small bed Scamp

My wife and I found sleeping head to toe with sleeping bags was the best way to deal with the 44" bed. We only shopped for 54" bed trailers in recent years. The latest requirement now is no crawl over. For a one person (hunting/fishing) trailer the 44" bed is fine.

Small Bed Options

To share our experience (we have owned our 13' SCAMP since 1975)....  Here are two options we have developed:

1.  We have widened the small rear bed, by inserting 1/4 inch plywood into the underside of the back cushions, which allows them to be cantilevered beyond the edge of the table, widening the middle of the bed by 4-6 inches.  That makes a big difference!

2.  We also have developed a way to widen the front bed, which also involves a cantilever and the use of filler foam pieces. (This process has been narrated in an article posted on this website, with photos.) This has made for a very comfortable second bed, so at age 75 we typically sleep in a "twin bed" arrangement.

Looking for 13' Scamp in the Northeast

Hello All,

My sister and I are looking for a used Scamp without a bathroom. We live in Massachusetts and we are willing to drive up to 10 hours to buy one. I was lucky to meet some people on the road a couple of years ago who had one and they invited me inside and it was love Scamp at first sight for me. However, my sister hasn't seen one yet. They are rare in the Northeast. Before we buy one it would be great if she could actually see one! If anyone in New England would be willing to invite us to see your Scamp whether it's for sale or not we would be grateful. Thank you!
