I confess, the aspect of crushing the axle housing had not occurred to me. I still wonder how much of a risk that is - where I have my jack stand there is a vertical welded piece around the axle that fastens it to the frame. That should substantially protect it against distortion, I would think. But the link to Scamp's procedure for tire changing does seem to support the notion of not jacking the axle.
Not sure what a frame member is but, there is a spot behind the tire on the frame that looks like it could possibly handle a Jack stand. Other than that I see nowhere.
The frame runs down both sides of the trailer from the front V to the back bumper. You can put the jacks under the bumper, but I move them under the trailer a bit on the frame member on each side to which the bumper is welded. (I think that is what you have identified as "behind the tire.")
Thanks everyone, the horse trailer equipment place who put the new axle on for me, said placing the jack stands on the beam (that the axle is inside of) would be fine but to go in about a foot from each tire. I didn't know that was a beam, just thought it was the axle. Should I move them? I don't want to damage the axle.
Many a leaf spring axle has been bent also. Here is the old Scamp information. (#3)

Thanks Greg, I am getting a lot of different advice.

Here's a close up image...
Thank you Scott, that's what I have been looking for.
